Obesity continues to grow – no pun intended

An interesting article appeared today; you can read it at cnn.com.  In the article 31 states had an increase in the rate of obesity.

The worst state is Mississippi with an obesity rate of 29.5 percent.  That means that almost one third of adults are not just overweight – they are obese.

Even worse, obesity rates tend to by higher where poverty is the greatest.  Obviously this is a serious problem.  Personally, I don’t believe governments can solve this problem.

What you eat is up to you.  Whether or not you exercise is up to you.  Only you can influence your weight.  This obesity epidemic can only be stopped if each of us take responsibility for ourselves.  Let’s hope we do, before it’s too late.

A side effect of going on vacation

In my previous post I talked about going on vacation.  I said that I would eat right, exercise, and drink lots of fluids.  I didn’t realize how important the fluids would be.

I’m a very regular person, if you know what I mean.  And yet, my entire family, myself included, was not regular for the first two days of our vacation.  We just went on a driving trip; we didn’t switch time zones or fly anywhere, and yet our schedules got all messed up.

I assume it’s because of spending time in the car, and not being on a routine schedule.  By day three we seem to be back to normal, but I learned an important lesson:

Fluids are very important while on vacation.  We all know that to lose weight you need fluids; apparently while on vacation water and other fluids are important to keep you regular.

For the rest of my vacation I plan to increase my water intake, just to be sure.

My Vacation Plan

An exercise program is great, when you have the time for exercise.  Keeping track of calories is also great, but can you do both and lose weight while on vacation?  That will be the trick, because I leave for a week’s vacation today.  Here’s my plan:

First, I plan to eat good food whenever possible.  I may have to eat in restaurants, but I will avoid fries, soft drinks and sugar, just like I do when I’m at home.

Second, exercise is still important, so every day I’ll go for a swim in the hotel pool, and I will do lots of walking while I tour the sites.

Finally, since it’s the summer, I will drink as much water as possible.  Staying hydrated is always important, so I want to focus on that while on vacation.  Also, it’s better to be full of water than full of junk food.  Stay tuned for the results.
